The UA is proud to count thousands of veterans among our membership. Those values in the military – service above self, duty, commitment, camaraderie, and hard work – are the same values that guide our great union.
The United Association established the UA Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program to equip military service members preparing to leave the service with sought after skills that can lead to lifelong careers in the increasingly in-demand pipe trades. Over the course of 118 days – provided free of cost on military bases across the United States – VIP participants earn earn industry-recognized certifications and direct entry into the UA and solid private-sector jobs with good pay and benefits.
Over the last decade, more than 2 million men and women have served and sacrificed for our nation. Despite being a disciplined and highly-trainable population, military members face an exceedingly high unemployment rate upon leaving the service. That’s why the UA worked closely with the United States Military and members of Congress in both parties to establish the UA VIP program.
The United Association Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program is a DOD SkillBridge program for transitioning active-duty military service members, which provides 118 days (720 hours) of accelerated training. UA VIP equips transitioning active-duty service members with hands-on training, industry-recognized certifications and educational resources to develop the skills required to be successful in the UA registered apprenticeship program, which ultimately leads to productive and rewarding careers in the mechanical construction industry.
First launched on Fort Lewis in Washington, the UA VIP program now offers nine different programs at seven different installations across the country.
In Congress, the UA Department of Legislative Affairs works hand-in-hand with our allies to expand access for transitioning service members and ensure they have all the tools necessary to succeed in civilian life.
“The program is impressive and aggressive. Almost every graduate has been placed in the best careers in the piping industry. Who deserves that more? Who has earned that more than the men and women of our armed forces?”
The UA is here for the next chapter.
With praise from Congress, the U.S. Department of Labor, the military and media, the UA VIP Program is recognized as one of the best active-duty military transition programs in the country.
